Mac mini has been setting the standard for ultra-compact desktop PCs since its launch 2005. Indeed, so good was the original Mac mini design, that it’s taken until this year for Apple to update it.
This update takes the form of the now familiar aluminium unibody design, as seen in the MacBooks and iMacs. It’s not just the construction that’s changed, though; the new Mac mini is now wider, but thinner, than its predecessor. To be precise it’s 197 x 197 x 36mm (WxDxH), making this mini 14.8mm thinner than before. On paper not a massive difference, but this and the additional 31.9mm width ways gives this new Mac mini a markedly squatter, lower-profile appearance.
Aside from admiring its self-evident beauty, one’s immediate impression upon seeing this is to think the Mac mini will fit under your TV even better now. Good news, then, that Apple has finally added an HDMI port, as well as an SD card reader. Better still, it has integrated the power supply into the chassis, cutting the clutter to an absolute minimum.
According to Apple, the new Mac mini is the most energy efficient desktop in the world but while I can’t confirm or deny that I would only add that it’s also the slimmest Mac mini out there. And thanks to the integrated power supply you don’t need an external power adapter so the total volume of the system has shrunk by 20 percent.
This is the most powerful Mac mini, too. It features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics and a up to 500GB of storage. On top of that you get an HDMI port and an SD card reader.
What Mac mini doesn’t do could be its biggest feat. It doesn’t waste energy. When Mac mini is idle, it consumes less than 10 watts — a 25 percent reduction from the previous generation.* No other desktop computer does that. Mac mini is made from highly recyclable aluminum. And its redesigned, lighter package makes it more efficient to ship.
